Helwig Carbon Products Purchases Lilly Software’s VISUAL Manufacturing, CRM, and Quality
Cites Superior Data Management Capabilities and End-to-End Versatility
29 September 2000, Hampton, NH (USA) -- Helwig Carbon Products has purchased 75 seats of VISUAL Manufacturing®, VISUAL Financials®, VISUAL CRM™, and VISUAL Quality® for use in their expansive carbon brush operation.
Helwig Carbon Products, a Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based manufacturer of carbon brushes, holders, and mechanical carbon products for traction motors and generators, is currently integrating VISUAL Manufacturing and VISUAL Quality in an effort to improve order entry and manage its shop floor more effectively. At any one time, Helwig stocks over 2000 different types and sizes of brushes in inventory and each day fulfills as many as 500 from-stock and specialized customer orders, some of which require as many as 15-20 operations, and contain more than 250 pieces. Working for years with a hybrid ERP system that provided poor access to data and amounted to little more than a migration toolkit, Helwig expressed an interest in obtaining and implementing a real solution. A testing phase proved that VISUAL Manufacturing, with its sophisticated database structure and feature-rich applications, was the solution the company was looking for. The ability of VISUAL Manufacturing to streamline vital business processes and integrate all aspects of its enterprise made the choice a relatively easy one.
Helwig’s MIS Manager, John Raffensperger, explains that they chose Lilly’s product over similar industry offerings after evaluating five or six different systems. “In the end, Lilly looked like the best fit for our business model.”
He said that the stability of Lilly Software and the fact that it is privately-held, like Helwig, also influenced the decision. “Lilly seemed stable and will most likely be around in the coming years.”
“VISUAL Manufacturing seemed as if it could solve all of our business problems,” he said. “We’d gain scheduling abilities, increased order entry accuracy, and improved customer service by using CRM. There’d be quicker turnaround time, and we’d cut design time by using the configurator.”
Raffensperger also cited VISUAL’s DCU barcode module as being a key factor in the decision-making process. Helwig intends to use it to streamline its data collection operations, and take advantage of the latest Microsoft® COM technologies available in VISUAL Manufacturing.
Helwig Carbon Products is running VISUAL Manufacturing on a UNIX Server using an Oracle database and plans to go live with VISUAL Manufacturing, Quality, and CRM by May 1, 2001.
