St. Lucie Press Launches Dick Lilly’s Book at APICS
11 October 2000, Hampton, NH (USA) -St. Lucie Press, a well established publisher of business, government, and educational texts, will officially launch Dick Lilly’s book, The Road to Manufacturing Success: Common Sense Throughput Solutions for Small Business at this year’s APICS International Conference & Exposition in Orlando, Florida, October 22-25.
The book is an insider’s account of the evolution of the manufacturing software industry by one of its founding fathers and visionaries, Dick Lilly, President and CEO of Lilly Software Associates. More than just a history or personal narrative, The Road to Manufacturing Success provides insightful solutions for today’s small manufacturers and offers advice to any manufacturer or technology company executive.
The book was written in collaboration with Frank O. Smith, principal of the Writing Group. Smith has been associated with the manufacturing software industry since 1983. His work has appeared in numerous publications, including Industry Week, Manufacturing Systems, Managing Automation, and Computerworld.
“St. Lucie Press was a perfect publisher for Mr. Lilly’s book,” states Lilly Software’s Manager of Creative Services, Brian Coombes, who placed the book with the publisher. “St. Lucie has a proud tradition of publishing books on manufacturing and technology. The people there were knowledgeable on the subject and enthusiastic about the project.”
The advance copy of The Road to Manufacturing Success has already received praise from many in the manufacturing software industry.
In his Foreword to the book, AMR Research’s Vice President of E-Business Application Strategies, Dave Caruso, writes: “To read this book is to gain an insight to the history of the software development industry that would be near impossible without having been there-an inside glimpse to the challenges, politics, and travails that many, if not all, of the software pioneers experienced. This book is an important and vital document. I recommend that anyone trying to understand the dynamics of the software and computer industries look no further.”
Paul F. Bacigalupo, a retired IBM Senior Industry Consultant and Former APICS President says that the book provides “both a history of computerized manufacturing systems and a vision for the future, all told with Dick’s personal touch, making this book a ‘must read.’”
The Publisher of St. Lucie Press, Drew Gierman, was also impressed by the book. “I’ve read a great many well-written, interesting, and informative books on manufacturing over the course of my career” says Gierman. “However, none held my interest more than Dick Lilly’s book. I couldn’t put it down. It’s an inspiration to any future or existing entrepreneur.”
The Road to Manufacturing Success is available wherever quality books are sold.
About Dick Lilly
Richard T. Lilly, President and CEO of Lilly Software Associates of Hampton, New Hampshire, has founded and presided over three successful software companies since he entered the computer business over 40 years ago.
Lilly joined IBM in 1960, where he worked alongside Ollie Wight, the pioneer of Materials Requirement Planning (MRP), and later Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRPII). Lilly left IBM to found Software International (SI) in 1975, where as president, he guided the company’s growth for seven years.
Following the acquisition of SI by General Electric in 1982, Lilly founded the highly successful ProfitKey International. As president, Lilly grew ProfitKey into a multi-million dollar business.
In 1992, Lilly left ProfitKey to form Lilly Software Associates, where he created the first concurrent, or “finite-capacity schedule” application, which considered both materials and resources when scheduling manufacturing operations. Lilly obtained the United States Patent on concurrent scheduling in July 1998.
